Hong Gil Nam is a South Korean Scientist in the field of plant development and growth control. He has played a key role in establishing the theory that plant senescence is controlled by genetic programs. He also proposed the existence of a senescence control mechanism, which could be identified by studying gene functionality. He published his findings on academic journals such as Cell, Science, and Nature.

Besides his academic achievements, his major contribution to the advance in life sciences in South Korea includes founding the Korean Biological Research Information Center (BRIC), one of the driving forces in education and research. He has also established the Korean Society of Bioinformatics and the Asian Association of Bioinformatics Societies, which played a crucial role in the early introduction and development of bioinformatics in South Korea.
