Inaugurated in 2002, National Mentoring Month is an American promotional campaign held each January to recruit volunteer mentors to help young people achieve their full potential.

Research has shown that programs which rely on volunteer mentors can play a powerful role in reducing drug abuse and youth violence, while greatly enhancing a young person's prospects for leading a healthy and productive life.

National Mentoring Month is spearheaded by the Harvard School of Public Health,[1] MENTOR,[2] and the Corporation for National & Community Service.[3] Each year since 2002, President George W. Bush has endorsed the campaign by proclaiming January as National Mentoring Month.[4] The declaration has been endorsed by both chambers of the Congress. According to The New York Times, the campaign's media partners have included: ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC; Comcast; National Association of Broadcasters; Time Warner; and Viacom.

Participants in the National Mentoring Month campaign include leading nonprofit organizations and numerous governors and mayors. In communities across the country, designated nonprofit and governmental agencies are responsible for coordinating local campaign activities, including media outreach and volunteer recruitment. These local lead partners include state and local affiliates of MENTOR/National Mentoring Partnership, Corporation for National and Community Service, Points of Light Foundation and Volunteer Center National Network, America's Promise Alliance, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, Communities in Schools, and United Way of America.

As a highlight of the campaign, the sixth annual Thank Your Mentor Day™ will be held on January 22, 2009. On that day, many Americans will reach out to thank or honor those individuals who encouraged and guided them, and had a lasting impact on their lives. An initiative of the Harvard School of Public Health, Thank Your Mentor Day promotes Four Ways to Honor Your Mentor: 1) contact your mentor directly to express your appreciation; 2) pass it on by becoming a mentor to a young person in your community; 3) make a financial contribution to a local mentoring program; and, 4) post a tribute to your mentor on www.WhoMentoredYou.org.

With MENTOR's ZIP code search, people can find profiles of local mentoring programs—e-mentoring, group, or one-to-one—and choose the program that works best.

Individuals and organizations can stay up-to-date on mentoring activities in each state during the National Mentoring Month. State Mentoring Partnerships use the month of January to focus national attention on youth mentoring—how it benefits young people, adults, and society as a whole.
