The National Women's Soccer League Players Association, or NWSLPA, is the officially recognized union of professional National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) players who are not allocated players.[1]

History

The NWSLPA was formed in May 2017 under the leadership of Yael Averbuch.[2] The group is represented by lawyer and former WPS player, Meghann Burke.[3][4][5] The NWSLPA, which officially unionized in late 2018, is led by executive director Yael Averbuch, president Brooke Elby, vice president Tori Huster, secretary Nicole Barnhart, and treasurer Emily Menges.

Awards

In 2019, the NWSLPA created its own end-of-season awards.[6] Unlike the NWSL awards, which are awarded by the league and are voted on by the media, coaches, and fans (in addition to the players), the NWSLPA Awards are voted on only by the NWSL players. The inaugural edition of the NWSLPA Awards included three categories:

  • Players' Player of the Year award
  • Players' Rookie of the Year award
  • Players' Team of the Year award
