The unity of the family was supported at a 95% confidence level by a 2008 analysis of the Austronesian Basic Vocabulary Database[1] Within the family, Nehan and Saposa–Tinputz were supported at a 92% level against Piva–Bannoni.

The Buka languages, Papapana, and Solos were not included in the 2008 analysis. They have traditionally been classified as independent branches of Nehan – North Bougainville. Of the Saposa–Tinputz languages, Saposa and Teop were found to cluster together against the others.
