Network of Excellence
Network of Excellence (NoE) is a category name (an "instrument" in the EC parlance) of a medium-sized research project co-funded by the European Commission in the Sixth and Seventh Framework Programmes (FP6 and FP7). According to the FP6 website, these projects are "designed to strengthen scientific and technological excellence on a particular research topic through the durable integration of the research capacities of the participants."[1]
NoE projects require the minimum participation of three different European Union member nations, however, projects are usually expected to involve at least six countries.[2] Projects are provided grants for a maximum of seven years. The budget granted by the Commission is one to six million euro per year depending upon the number of researchers involved.[2]
An NoE project should not really be considered as a research project, since its aim is not to conduct research, but rather to contribute to the clarification of the concepts in the covered field.[citation needed]
