The band had ideas to start work on a debut album after changing their name from Extra Large Kids to Design the Skyline. Initially the members set plans to release a full-length titled, Synthetic Cities which even had its own artwork completed along with many of its songs recorded and planned but were never fully finished or mastered. The project was abandoned. The reason for this was due to the band aspiring to pursue a completely different and more "mature" sound than what they had originally interpreted after their signing to Victory in May.[4]

Nevaeh was then written and recorded by the course of May through July of 2011. The album spawned two singles; "Break Free from Your Life" and "Cybernetic Strawflower" before its release.[5]

Sound and musical structure

In an interview when asked about Neveah in comparison to their controversial single "Surrounded by Silence", the group responded with saying "Well [the album] is a whole 180 turn from Surrounded By Silence; you will barely here any math influences or crazy time signatures." Which was then followed along with: "people don’t seem to realize that the Surrounded By Silence song was just a demo song and not every band sounds their best on their first demo, you know, and its crazy how much it blew us up!"[6]

The band has cited Brokencyde and Blood on the Dance Floor as some of the influences for the album's musical structure.[7]
