The nic.at GmbH, based in Salzburg, is the domain name registry for the top-level domain of .at. AT is the ISO 3166 country code for Austria. Nic.at is 100% owned by the Internet Foundation Austria [de] and employs about 30 people. Since 1988, when the responsibility was still at the University of Vienna Domains for .at have been registered at will.[1]

The tasks of nic.at include:

  • Providing information about the domain registration and management, for example, WHOIS queries
  • Central registration and administration of Austria-wide domain names ending in .at, .co.at (company). .or.at (organizational)

The Zentraler Informatikdienst [Central Computer Science Service] of the University of Vienna Domains administers the academic domain, .ac.at, which is exclusively reserved for the academic and school environment.[2] The Federal Chancellery of Austria manages the governmental domain, .gv.at.[3]
