Notscheid is a locality in the municipality Sankt Katharinen in the district of Neuwied in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
Geography
The village lies on the watershed between the Rhine and the Wiedtal in low Westerwald northeast of the town center of St. Catherine . North of the village is the district boundary to local Vettelschoß, west is the district boundary of the town of Linz am Rhein.
History
The town probably goes back to the time of the High Middle Ages clearing phase. The name appeared in numerous different versions, including Nodscheidt, Noschiedt, Noscheid, Noschet, Noschot, Noschit, Norscheid, and Noschoß. It is attributed to Notscheids being on a highway that has been or makeshift used in case of flooding on other ways.
