Oceanic Big 5 is a project of Ocean Recovery Alliance to encourage the five biggest athletic users of the ocean to spend a day cleaning up the environment that is used for their activity.[1] The top five sport users of the ocean environment who can be "ambassadors" for the waters they use are: surfers, sailors, swimmers, divers and paddlers.[1][2]

Goal

To engage the oceanic sports community in World Oceans Day and increase awareness about the importance of clean and healthy oceans.[1][3] Surfers, sailors, swimmers, divers and paddlers can be ambassadors to the community about the health of the ocean and issues such as pollution.[4]

How it works

Athletic teams, recreational clubs, or just groups of friends that wish to be part of the "Oceanic Big 5" are encouraged to organize a cleanup day "in, on or under" the water, in the week of World Oceans Day, June 8. Ocean Recovery Alliance offers groups guidelines for a group cleanup here and will collate information on waste collection efforts.[1] Groups should collect, recycle and properly dispose of non-organic waste and document quantities of waste collected by reporting to Ocean Recovery Alliance.[1]
