On the Pleasure of Hating is an essay by William Hazlitt published in 1821 that appears within a collection of seven other essays in “Table Talk”.[1][2] In the essay, Hazlitt reflects on humans' constitutional appetite for hostility and their tendency to grow bored with the familiar. The essay offers a cynical portrait of humankind by pointing to deep and persistent contradictions in human character.
