Peter James Carroll (born January 8 1953, Patching, England) is a modern occultist, author, co-founder of the Illuminates of Thanateros, and practician of chaos magic theory.[1]

Biography

Peter J. Carroll is a leading figure within the Chaos Magic movement. Along with 'The New Equinox" publisher and writer Ray Sherwin, Carroll is widely considered to be the originator of Chaos Magic as an independent field of occult exploration. Carroll and Sherwin created the a loosely organized group called the Illuminates of Thanateros.

In 1995, Carroll announced his desire to step down from the "roles of magus and pontiff of chaos".[2] This statement was originally delivered at the same IOT international meeting which Carroll discussed in an article titled "The Ice War"[3] in Chaos International.

In 2005, he appeared as a chaos magic instructor at Maybe Logic Academy[4] at the request of Robert Anton Wilson. This experience reawoke his interest in the subject of magic and he has since announced another book on the subject.[5]

Carroll writes columns for Chaos International magazine currently edited by Ian Read under the names Peter Carroll and Stokastikos, his magical name within the Pact.[6]
