Plan-B Theatre Company is one of five professional theatre companies in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is the smallest in terms of budget and staff. Plan-B develops and produces unique and socially conscious theatre, it is the only theatre company in Utah devoted to developing new plays by Utah playwrights, and is the resident theatre company at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center.[1] In fact, The Dramatists Guild of America has noted that Plan-B is the only professional theatre company in the United States producing full seasons of new work by local playwrights.

History

The company was founded in 1991 and incorporated in 1995 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

To date, the company has been honored with 51 Salt Lake City Weekly Best of Utah Arts Awards and Organization of the Year awards from Equality Utah, Human Rights Campaign and Transgender Education Advocates of Utah (twice), In 2015, the company was awarded both Utah's Governor's Leadership in the Arts Award and Salt Lake City's Mayor's Artist Award for Service to the Arts by an Organization. And the International Centre for Women Playwrights honored the company with its 50/50 Applause Award in 2016.

As of December 2016, the company has produced 87 world premieres.[2]

Plan-B is the only theatre company in Utah history to have published anthologies of full-length, original plays: Plays From Behind The Zion Curtain (2008) and More Plays From Behind The Zion Curtain (2010), published by Juniper Press/Oxide Books and Even More Plays From Behind The Zion Curtain (2012), New Plays IV (2013), #SeasonOfEric (2014), New Plays VI (2015) and Twenty-Fifth Anniversary (2016), published by Smashwords.[3]

IndieTheatreNow has also published PLAN-B in NYC (2013).

Plan-B is also the only theatre company in Utah history to have toured internationally (Leslea Newman's A Letter To Harvey Milk, Frankfurt, Germany; Aden Ross' AMERIKA, Toronto, Ontario, Canada) and transferred an intact production off-Broadway (Carol Lynn Pearson's Facing East). In 2013, Matthew Greene's ADAM & STEVE AND THE EMPTY SEA toured to the New York International Fringe Festival and Matthew Ivan Bennett's ERIC(A) toured to the United Solo Theatre Festival, also in New York, where it won Best Drama. In 2015, the company returned to United Solo with Eric Samuelsen's THE KREUTZER SONATA.

Plan-B operates under a Letter of Agreement with Actors' Equity Association and an Independent Producers Agreement with the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society. Plan-B is also an associate member of the National New Play Network.
