Polewali-Mamasa used to be part of South Sulawesi but is now part of West Sulawesi province. The region has split into two smaller regions. The sea-side region is named as Polewali Mandar, while the mountain area is called Mamasa. Polewali Mandar is mainly inhibited by the Mandar ethnic group, while Mamasa contains the Mamasan people, who are related to the ethnic group Toraja.
