The Public Transport Authority, or PTA, is a Western Australian statutory authority. It operates public transport in Western Australia. This authority is the most recently constituted body governing public transport in Western Australia. In previous decades the most commonly remembered name of public transport was of the Western Australian Government Railways which had both railway and road transport services - the same as the current PTA.

Services

The Public Transport Authority runs many services. They are:

  • Transperth, which is the trading name of the public transport system in metropolitan Perth.
  • Transwa, which is the trading name of the public transport system between towns in regional WA.
  • New MetroRail, oversaw the construction of the Southern Suburbs Transit System. NMR closed in December 2007.
  • TransAlbany, Albany bus services.
  • TransBunbury, Bunbury bus services.
  • School Bus Services, providing school buses to children in rural and remote areas.
  • TransBusselton, Busselton and Dunsborough.
  • TransGeraldton, Geraldton bus services
  • TransGoldfields, Kalgoorlie-Boulder bus services
  • Bus services in Port Headland
  • Network and Infrastructure Division, making sure public transport infrastructure is safe.

SmartRider

The Public Transport Authority and Transperth introduced a smartcard, SmartRider, to replace MultiRiders from January 2007. This can be used on Transperth, TransAlbany, TransBunbury, TransBusselton, TransGeraldton and TransGoldfields services.

Perth's fuel cell bus trial

The Public Transport Authority is not participating in this trial. The Department for Planning and Infrastructure and Transperth are running the Perth part of this trial.
