For the television series, see RAN Remote Area Nurse (television) series.

A remote area nurse serves as a primary health care worker (nurse) in remote areas of Australia, where population density and remoteness precludes the provision of permanent doctors.

The RAN can call on medical help from the established hospital system or the Flying Doctor Service.
