"Rock Bottom"
Song

"Rock Bottom" is a song by American actress and singer Hailee Steinfeld, featuring the American funk pop band DNCE. The song was written by Mattias Larsson, Robin Fredriksson, Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter, and producer by Mattman & Robin.[1] The song was released on February 27, 2016 by Republic Records.[2] The song serves as the second single for Steinfeld's debut extended play, Haiz (2015), after "Love Myself".[3]

Background

In the weeks prior to the Haiz's release, "Hell Nos and Headphones" was being touted as the collection's second single,[4] but "You're Such A" was selected instead.[5] However, it was scrapped in favor of the new version of "Rock Bottom", featuring the American funk pop band DNCE.[6]

Composition

"Rock Bottom" was written by Mattias Larsson, Robin Fredriksson, Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter, and producer by Mattman & Robin.[1] The song talks about a couple in a self-destructive relationship where both parties are unhappy ("What are we fighting for? / Seems like we do it just for fun / In this, this stupid war"), but keep trying, because their love is like a drug ("We're on the right side of rock bottom / And to you, I just keep crawling / You're the best kind of bad something / Cause we keep on coming back for more").[7]

Music video

The video premiered on Vevo on March 25, 2016. It features model, John Economou as Steinfeld's love interest in the video. The video depicts a tumultuous relationship between Steinfeld and Economou who argue one moment and are in love the next. They go to a concert where DNCE perform and Steinfeld joins them on stage while showing flashbacks of her relationship. Economou leaves and after realizing and seeing all the good times they had together, she follows. As she is in the cab, it goes back to them fighting before the concert. She finds him and gets out of the cab to run after him. The video ends with them kissing in the rain.[8]
