Rodea the Sky Soldier (天空の機士ロデアー, Tenkuu no Kishi Rodea) is an action video game developed by Kadokawa Games and Prope for the Wii U, Wii, and Nintendo 3DS. It was released in Japan on April 2, 2015, and will be released in North America and Europe in October 2015.[1]

Development

Rodea the Sky Soldier started with an allusion by Yuji Naka in 2010, where he described "a very original action game based in the sky."[2][3] After some development CVG praised the game's early build, drawing comparisons to the game with other games developed by Naka, such as Nights into Dreams... and the Sonic franchise.[4] Naka revealed in 2011 that the Wii version of the game was finished, and needed Kadokawa Games to publish it for a potential release.[5] The same year XSEED Games expressed interest in localizing Rodea the Sky Soldier for the North American region.[6] A few years passed however without a release by Kadokawa Shoten, and Naka stated in a Polygon interview that he was unsure what was going to happen with the game.[7] Kadokawa Games president Yoshimi Yasuda revealed in a July 2013 interview that the 3DS version is roughly 70% finished, and that the game's release was not cancelled.

On May 2014, Kadokawa Games filed a trademark for "Rodea: The Sky Soldier".[8] On November 14, 2014, Kadokawa announced that the home version of the game has switched platforms from the Wii to the Wii U and that the game was now scheduled to be released in Spring 2015. It was also revealed that the originally cancelled Wii game will be a bonus in the initial print.[9][10]

In the Japanese version of the January 2015 Nintendo Direct, it was announced that Rodea the Sky Soldier would be released April 2 in Japan for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. Those who pre-order or pick up first print copies of the Wii U version of Rodea the Sky Soldier will get the original unreleased Wii version as a bonus, which features the game's original controls using the Wii Remote, unsupported on the Wii U version.

Gameplay

For the Wii U version (and presumably the Nintendo 3DS version), gameplay consists of controlling the game's protagonist, Rodea, by drawing small arcs on the console's touch screen to curve him towards his destination.

The Wii version controls by aiming with the Wii Remote at solid objects and pressing the B button to have Rodea fly in parabolic arcs.[4]
