Roza Volodymyrivna Sarkisyan, Ukrainian: Саркісян Роза Володимирівна (born 20 January 1987) is a Ukrainian theatre director and curator. She is Director of the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theatre named after Ivan Franko.

Biography

Sarkisyan was born on 20 January 1987 in Stepanakert, Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region.[1] In 1992 she moved to Ukraine with her parents.[2] From 2004-2009 she studied Sociology at the National University of Kharkiv. In 2012 she graduated from the Department of Directoing at Kharkiv National University of Arts.[3][2] She has worked with the Severodonetsk Municipal Theatre, the Russian Academic Youth Theatre, the Moscow Theatre "Mansion", the Udmurt Academic Theatre of Russian Drama and the Kharkiv Theatre for Young Spectators in Warsaw.[4] She founded the DeFacto Theatre with Diana Khodyachykh to produce postdramatic theatre.[2] Sarkisyan works mostly within postdrama.[5] She has been outspoken about the inequalities in pay and gender in Ukrainian theatre.[1] She was also director of the First Academic Ukrainian Theatre for Children and Youth in Lviv, where she directed a new translation to Ukrainian of the English play Black Thrushes.[6] She is an admirer of the work of British playwright Sarah Kane.[7]

Since 2019 she was been the Director of the Ivano-Frankivsk National Academic Drama Theatre named after Ivan Franko.[1] Collaborators include: Oksana Cherkashina,[1] Joanna Wichowska on the Polish production of PIĘKNE, PIĘKNE, PIĘKNE CZAS,[8] and again with Wichowska on the play H-Effect which was co-written by Sarkisyan.[9] H-Effect combined text from Hamlet by British playwright William Shakespeare with text from the play Hamletmachine by German playwright Heiner Mueller.[10] During the COVID-19 pandemic in Ukraine, Sarkisyan directed productions which premiered online.[11] In 2021 she directed a production of Romeo & Juliet which worked with young people and actors with disabilities.[12]
