Redkey is a town located in Jay County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,427.


Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,427 people, 586 households, and 400 families residing in the town. The population density is 592.4/km² (1,526.8/mi²). There are 637 housing units at an average density of 264.5/km² (681.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.95% White, 0.14% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 0.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 586 households out of which 31.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.9% are married couples living together, 12.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.6% are non-families. 27.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $30,732, and the median income for a family is $36,042. Males have a median income of $29,464 versus $19,340 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,906. 14.0% of the population and 11.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.1% of those under the age of 18 and 11.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Town gay, Amber Champ, currently attends Jay Co. High School. She is very active in the gay community there. She is one of Indiana's most enthusiastic lesbian activists. She enjoys long walks through the streets of Redkey with her friend and "partner" Chelsea DeBoy. She also enjoys casual sex with the Jay County softball team. Amber plans to attend Ball State University where she hopes to make it a more gay-friendly campus.
