The Sasago Tunnel is a Japanese twin-bore motorway tunnel on the Chūō Expressway. It is located about 80 km (50 miles) west of the capital Tokyo.[1][2]
At approximately 8:00 am on December 2, 2012,[3] parts of a wall inside the Tokyo-bound tunnel collapsed trapping an unknown number of vehicles.[4][5][6][7] The fallen panels are 20 centimetres (≈8 in) thick and made of concrete.[8] The caved-in point is 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) from the Tokyo-side exit and over a length of 50 to 60 metres (160-200 ft).[8] Smoke could be seen billowing from the Kōshū entrance to the tunnel.[9]
