Sato is a Puerto Rican slang term referring to a mixed breed dog.[1]
While strays come in a variety of shapes and sizes, sato dogs are often small to medium-sized, with large ears and stubby legs. Animal rights groups in Puerto Rico claim that they are frequently the target of abuse and neglect.[1]
Owners of satos have remarked on the animals' versatility. Satos are described as intelligent, robust, and loyal family pets. On the street, the average life expectancy of satos is only 2 years, but in a household they are known to live up to 12 years.
