Shane O'Neill (born 1 March 1986 in Bishopstown, Cork, Ireland) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club Bishopstown and has been a member of the Cork senior inter-county team since 2007.
O'Neill plays hurling with his local club Bishopstown and has enjoyed much success. He has won two county minor titles and one under-21 title. In 2006 O’Neill played a key role at half-back when his club won the Cork Intermediate Hurling Championship. This victory allowed Bishopstown to secure promotion to the senior grade for 2007.
O'Neill first came to prominence on the inter-county scene in 2004. That year he tasted his first success with Cork as he captured a Munster minor title. In the subsequent All-Ireland semi-final against Galway he excelled during an otherwise poor display for Cork which resulted in a defeat. By 2005 O’Neill had joined the Cork under-21 hurling team. That year he won a Munster title in that grade, however, success in the All-Ireland series proved elusive. Shane was brought into the Cork senior panel as a result of his mature displays, with this he was an unused sub in the 2005 All Ireland final, which Cork went onto win by 1-21 to 1-16. It was Shane's first All Ireland Medal. In 2006 Shane was again part of the senior panel and he won a first Munster medal as an unused sub as Cork recorded a narrow win over Tipperary. It was Shane's first Munster medal at senior level with Cork. Two years later in 2007 O'Neill was appointed captain of the Cork under-21 hurling team. He added a second Munster medal to his collection that year, however, Cork were later defeated by Galway in the All-Ireland final.
As a result of Diarmuid O'Sullivan's suspension for the 2007 Munster Senior Hurling Championship semi-final with Waterford, O'Neill was charged with the task of filling in as the full-back on the team. He gave a good display on that ocacsion and has made a number of appearances for Cork since then. In 2008 O'Neill became a regular on the starting fifteen ain the right corner-back position. His style of play has been described as "quietly effective" In January 2011, O'Neill was made captain of the Cork hurlers for the 2011 season.
