}}Saint Bedes School is a mixed comprehensive secondary school in the English town of Redhill, Surrey. It was opened in 1979 as a girls' middle school but now has over 1700 male and female pupils aged 11-18 (Years 7-13), with around 350 students in the sixth form, drawn from a large catchment extending from Caterham to Crawley. |
==The School== |
As the only state-funded, fully ecumenical Christian comprehensive secondary school, it was founded by the Church of England Diocese of Southwark and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Arundel and Brighton. It also works in formal and close partnership with local Free Churches (Methodist, Baptist, United Reformed and many other "non-conformist" Churches). Its ecumenical outlook is reflected in its provision of chaplains from several denominational groups, regular assemblies and a dedicated chapel. RE is taught in denominations up to Year 9, and in years 10 & 11 GCSE Religious Studies (Christianity) is compulsory. As the school is a Christian school, most applicants to Key Stages 3 & 4 (years 7-11) must demonstrate commitment to a local church. |
The current head teacher is Christopher Curtis who was appointed as Headteacher in September 1997. He has been prominent in leading the school's successful cheerleading squad, dance squad and climbing activities. |
==Academics== |
In a recent Ofsted inspection, the school was graded as "outstanding" and has recently been made a dual Specialist Music College and ICT College status. It has always had a consistently high standard of academic achievement across the board, as reflected in the competitiveness of applications drawn from such a large catchment. |
The drama department have recently performed 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' at the Shakespeare Schools festival in the Leatherhead Theatre and at the school. St Bede's has a large creative arts building and the current head of drama is Mrs Sally Townsend. |
