The City Stadium (aka Stadium in Maślice) is a planned elite football (soccer) stadium, which will be built in Wrocław, Poland. The stadium will have a seating capacity of 42,771 people[1]. Construction is began in April 2009, and will be completed in June 2011. It will be used as a host stadium for the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship. Originally, the plan was to refurbish the Olympic Stadium for the championship. However it was decided to build a new stadium. The current name is merely informal as the stadium's final has not yet been decided upon.

Concept

The winning architectural concept developed by JSK Architekci was STADIUM-LANTERN, whose distinctive shape will be easily recognisable and associated with the dynamic city.

It stands out mostly because of its shape, highlighted by the very innovative design of external walls. The building will be covered by glass fibre mesh coated with teflon. The mesh will be fixed with steel rings placed around the entire body of the stadium. The project is unique on the nationwide scale. It lends lightness and transparency to this huge structure, making it a venue not only for sport events, but a meeting place. The special design of lighting technology makes it possible change the colour of the external walls. The choice of colours will depend on the type of event that will take place at the stadium.

Under the semi-transparent facade, RC stands and four satellite, bean-shaped buildings will be hidden.

The architectural concept developed by JSK is not limited to the stadium building only, but includes the surrounding infrastructure, too. An external promenade around the stadium, called the esplanade, is one of its elements. The esplanade will be used by fans to get inside the stadium from two directions. From the south, it will lead under Lotnicza Street, providing a comfortable passage for fans from the park&ride zone (the integrated tram stop, train station, and external car park). From the north, it provides access to the northern public transport interchange - city trams and buses, as well as bus parking area. As a result, a very efficient hub for the main access routes of the stadium will be created.

In front of the stadium, landscaping elements will be provided on the esplanade, such as benches with greenery, to be used as a place to relax or meet friends.

Functions

The stadium will be divided into a number of dedicated zones necessary for the proper functioning of a sport arena. VIP guests are offered an exclusive car park under the rim of the stadium, making it possible to reach the spacious VIP zone entry hall at level 0 in the western section of the stadium in just a few minutes. It is a meeting place and communication centre for this part of the stadium. At this level, VIP fans can stay very close to football players - only a glass wall separates the VIP entry zone from the teams' zone. Panoramic lifts and an open staircase will take them to upper levels. A spacious and exclusively equipped Business Club at level 1 is located at two levels. The architectural design makes in possible to divide Business Club into three smaller rooms. Each of these areas has its separate facilities, such as bar tops and counters with the necessary equipment. Each Business Club seat has its own Internet connection, which will surely make business meetings more efficient. At level 3, VIPs may take their seats in 20 VIP boxes offering the exclusive and unique view of the pitch. In the eastern stand, at the same level, 10 VIP boxes available for rental are located - the so-called Incentive Boxes. VIP seats are broken down into three sectors: gold, silver, and bronze, depending on their location and the view they offer.

The esplanade surrounding the entire stadium takes you up from the ground level to level 1. Various types of food and beverage kiosks, medical aid rooms, the police offices, and toilets are located on the promenade. Seats for fans with disabilities are located in stands with grade-separated access. Next to each seat for a disabled fan, there is a separate seat for his/her carer. The new stadium will be an arena without barriers. A Fan Shop is located at the same level. It is dedicated to the fans of WKS Śląsk Wrocław and offers merchandise such as scarves, T-shirts, mugs, and posters. The teams' zone is located at level 0 in the western part of the stadium. The facilities for both teams are equipped in the same way, including the locker room, massage room, showers, toilets, coach room, and warm-up area. In addition, an indoor swimming pool will be built. The teams' zone also includes rooms and areas for the medical staff, referrees, children (including locker rooms), and UEFA delegates, as well as doping control facilities. The media zone is located in the upper section of the western stand. Each seat meets the requirements of FIFA/UEFA and is equipped with the necessary communication infrastructure (power, telephone, Internet, TV). Some seats have a foldable desktop, and commentators' seats have revolving chairs.

UEFA Euro 2012

The stadium is one of the venues for the UEFA Euro 2012. Three group matches are to be played here.
