Stapleton is an English and Irish surname dating back to the times of Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain.[citation needed] It is a habitation name; examples of habitations are found in Cumbria, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Leicestershire, Shropshire, Somerset and Yorkshire, and is from the Old English word stapol meaning post and ton meaning settlement. [1]

The Stapleton family was dispossessed from England in the Irish Rebellion of 1641.[citation needed]
