Studium Generale Marcianum
The Studium Generale Marcianum can be seen as an "ideal project" acknowledging the request for the integral education of the person felt by the universal Church in Venice. The Studium offers specific levels of academic education and interdisciplinary and international cultural services: secondary school, university, research, and continuing higher education.
The Studium Generale Marcianum Foundation (founded in December 2007) fosters and supports this ideal project in the many cultural activities and scientific initiatives offered by its individual institutions, and in the management of the structural and secretarial-services, administration, library and cafeteria. The Foundation also offers a continuing higher education project that creates an inter-institutional synergy between university studies and cultural-scientific research, and, equally important, between secondary school and university education.
History
The Studium Generale Marcianum, headquartered in the area of the basilica of Santa Maria della Salute, was established in 2004 by Cardinal Angelo Scola, current Archbishop of Milan, the Patriarch of Venice from 2004 to 2011. The Studium contains various institutions ranging from elementary, primary and secondary schools, to a theological faculty, and extending to postgraduate research.
An educational program rooted deeply in the cultural heritage of the Patriarchate and the vocation of Venice and the Venetian Church as the meeting place of cultures and peoples, a historic bridge to the many shores of the Mediterranean; reaching out to the East as well as to the South of the world.
The solemn opening took place on April 24, 2004 in the presence of Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Angelo Scola the Cardinal Patriarch of Venice, Marco Cé the Patriarch Emeritus, and Javier Echevarría, prelate of Opus Dei and Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross.
Grand Chancellor "pro tempore" is His Excellency Mons. Francesco Moraglia, Patriarch of Venice.
Rector Magnificus is Prof. Msgr. Brian E. Ferme.
