Thiyagarajah Maheswaran or widely known as T. Maheswaran was a ethnic Tamil Sri Lankan Member of Parliament (MP) from Jaffna. He belonged to the main opposition United National Party and was critic of Rajapakse government's war against Tamil rebels.[1] He was the former Hindu Affairs minister and a former Member of Parliament for Jaffna District, escaped an assassination attempt on the final day of the 2004 election campaign in Colombo. He was shot dead on January 1 2008.

Assasination

He was shot by an unidentified gunman while attending to the New Year prayers at Kotahena, Sivam Kovil around 1035 local time (0505 GMT) and later succumbed into injuries at the Colombo General Hospital with along one of his body guard. He had earlier escaped an assassination attempt in 2004. According to the government defense ministry spokesman, the gunman was wounded when Maheswaran's bodyguard returned fire and had been arrested and hospitalized.[2][3][4][5]
