I was diagnosed with Perthes disease at the age of 7 years in 1952 and spent 2 years immobilised in a plaster cast in Stracathro Hospital, Angus, Scotland . This did lead to some atrophy of my leg muscles and stiffened knee and ankle joints but physiotherapy to ease the joint movements and a rough and tumble countryside upbringing led to an excellent recovery. One leg was 1 inch shorter but fortuitously(?!) I fractured the other one shortly after discharge from the hospital. My caliper became trapped in rear wheel of my father's tractor when rounding a corner. When the plaster cast was removed both legs were the same length. Now aged 60 I haven't had a twinge of arthritis so early diagnosis and treatment before the age of 10 years certainly gives an encouraging prognosis.
