(.308in) actually equals to 7,82 mm
Applying direct conversions to nominal dimensions will give inappropriate results. This is due to the fact that the bullet must fit to the bottom of the two 0.004 inch grooves cut to create the rifling. The barrel is bored to a diameter of 0.300 inches (30 caliber). The bullet nomenclature uses this bore diameter for the metric conversion to 7.62mm. In order to fit tightly into the deeper grooves the bullet is 0.008 inches larger than the bore diameter, thus an actual diameter of 0.308 inches.
