[edit]

Until earlier this month "Abdul Rashid" was a redirect to "Abdur Rashid". This was justified because the two forms are merely variant transliterations of Arabic: عبد الرشيد as explained on the Abdur Rashid page (now moved to Abdul Rashid (name)). The spelling variations of this name are marked between different individuals, and less so between references to the same indiividual, but the latter do occur. Abdur Rashid is currently a name page, not a disambiguation page, although it can be used to assist disambiguation. The question then arises: is a dab page necessary? and if so, what should it be callled? To the first question I give a weak "no", but if consensus overrules me on that I think that distinguishing the name page from the dab page by the "Abdul/Abdur" difference is not a good idea, and is likely to lead to the misunderstandings which I think underlie some recent edits. If we must have both, better to have the same spelling variant, and perhaps use a "(name)" qualification for the name page. SamuelTheGhost (talk) 19:54, 17 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@SamuelTheGhost: I wouldn't oppose a merge of this with the "Abdur Rashid" page. Gut feeling suggests that Abdul is the most common transliteration in English, rather than Abdur, so a reverse merge to this page may be a better outcome. SFB 21:14, 17 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I converted the "Abdul Rashid" redirect into a disambiguation page. There are multiple people of this full name and the incoming links were not mark as being incorrect as the "Abdur Rashid" page is a name page (surname and given name). I'd prefer to keep the two pages separate. Keep a dab page at "Abdul Rashid" (perhaps with people named "Abdur Rashid" merged in). Move "Abdur Rashid" to Abdul Rashid (name) to cover details of the name (derivation etc) plus those people with those names as a given or surname. Tassedethe (talk) 15:05, 18 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've made the move to Abdul Rashid (name) and done a bit of consequential tidying. SamuelTheGhost (talk) 17:05, 18 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
