Scuttles?[edit]

What exactly is the meaning of "glass scuttles"? The wiktionary link supports only the sense of portholes, i.e., windows, for illumination and viewing. But in contrast with "solid plug" my guess is that we're talking about accommodation for scuttling, basically a break-glass-to-sink-ship facility. Except scuttle, as a noun, seems not to be very common for such a thing; there are sea-cocks (which are obviously a kind of valve). Google searches are complicated by the use of the word as both noun and verb, the dominant meaning of "porthole", and some interchange with "scupper".

I'm considering changing "glass scuttles" to "glass scuttle plugs" and changing the link to Wikipedia's "Scuttling" article, unless someone can confirm that it isn't scuttling we're talking about at all.

Portholes is correct, so try to restrain your flights of fancy.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 17:48, 11 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
