Most notable & longest service as Shawnee — Recommend rename.

[edit]

Suggest rename to SS Shawnee (1927). Of the 1927 — 1949 history of the ship only the last three years were as a serviceable ship Partizanka and the most notable portions transport of post war migrants. That is less time than transporting troops and cargo as the U.S. Army Transport Shawnee from 1942 to 1946, including becoming part of "MacArthur's Navy," the SWPA local permanent fleet in 1944/45.

In searches related to revising I noted two items. The term "Shawnee" as a ship is difficult to isolate. There are too many things named Shawnee, from roads to the "bent banana" helicopter of Korean/Vietnam war note. Thus "SS" and "1927" in title recommendation. Second, there were many more references to troop ship activities in SWPA. These were mentions in unit histories, some interesting, but not significant enough to include though they gave dates and places. Most interesting, though vague yet definite, were references to enhanced medical contingents aboard as a ship dealing with wounded. A number of semi-official (A lot of that permanent local fleet was "semi-official" as far as Washington was concerned!) "ambulance ships" and small craft were used in that island campaign and it is highly likely this was the role. The interesting bit was the one reference I used, a cite in a book, that cites a National Archives College Park, RG227 item referring to a report from a Medical Corps Transport Surgeon (the senior medical officer aboard troop transports) concerning "Station Hospital U.S.A.T. Shawnee." "Station Hospital" indicates a possible enhanced status from normal transport medical facilities that were designed to treat normal illness and emergencies among troops during fairly brief (if miserable) voyages. 72.196.202.60 (talk) 01:32, 29 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
