DANFS versus Lloyd's Register

[edit]

Lloyd's Register and the Mercantile Navy List always recorded Culgoa as having one screw, driven by a triple-expansion engine. Her sister ship Bungaree had the same. In particular, compound engines would have been uncompetitive for a new ship running between Europe and Australia by the end of the 1880s. DANFS' claim that she had twin screws and compound engines therefore seems highly unlikely.

43,058 cubic feet (1,219 m3) is not much cargo space in a 3,444 GRT ship. Comparison with other ships of similar size listed in Lloyd's Register's "List of vessels fitted with refrigerating appliances" for 1896 suggests that this was only a minor part of her total cargo capacity. She seems to have been a cargo ship with a minor part of her holds refrigerated, rather than a reefer ship per se.

I am puzzled that the Annual List of Merchant Vessels of the United States for 1922, 1923, and 1924 do not list the ship, either as Champlain, or as Culgoa. Lloyd's Register gives an address for LH Stewart in New York City, and lists Champlain as the only ship that s/he owned at that time.
