Tanya Blount (born September 25, 1977,[citation needed] Washington, D.C., United States) is an African American actress, author and musician.

Early life and education

Blount was educated at Morgan State University, where she majored in psychology and sang in the university choir.[1]

Career

She secured a recording contract with Polydor Records at age 18, [citation needed] but at age 16 was featured in the film, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, where as the character "Tanya", she performed a duet of "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" with Lauryn Hill.

Her first album, Natural Thing, was released in 1994 and peaked at number seven.[2] The album's first single "I'm Gonna Make You Mine" [3] peaked to #57 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart. Two singles followed, "Through the Rain" peaking at #27 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart [4] and "Hold On" at (#66) [5] by 1995 she received a nomination for Best New Artist at the Soul Train Awards.

Blount has had a consistent musical theatre career in productions including What Every Woman Wants, Sneaky, Preacher's Kids, Born to Sing! and Christmas in Washington.[citation needed]

One of the first appearances of Blount's more recent works, "Right Here", was in the 2008 Tyler Perry film, The Family That Preys.[citation needed]
