Tanya Gallagher is an American indie folk singer-songwriter from Pensacola, Florida.
Early life
Born in Pensacola, Florida, Gallagher is the youngest of four, in a family that grew up on the Gulf of Mexico near the Florida-Alabama line.[1]. Tanya grew up in a musical and loving household learning to sing from her grandfather.[2] She began writing songs from the time she learned to write and at the age of 15 auditioned for her church choir.[3] At the age of 18, Gallagher picked up the guitar and began to play at venues throughout the Southeast. [4]
Career
Gallagher attended the University of West Florida where she received her Bachelors and Master's in Environmental Science. [5] While at UWF, she formed her first band, Baylen, with her brother-in-law Jonathan Britnell [6] The acoustic-indie-pop duo released their first record "It's Been So Long" in 2007 [7]. In 2009, Gallagher traveled to Hampton, Virginia to work as a summer intern for the NASA Langley Research Center [8] Following her return from NASA, her band Baylen amicably split in 2010 upon Britnell's relocated to Austin, Texas. Gallagher then formed the jam band, Dr. Hu and the Love Machine[1] with fellow college friends Ben Coppenger, Ben Coppenger, Joey Whibbs, Nick Milano, and Aerial Tolentino.
After graduating with her Masters from UWF, Gallagher met singer/songwriter Leathan Milne [2] and traveled to Vancouver, BC to record her first solo album Oh My Love, which was released in 2013[9]. In Fall 2013, Gallagher relocated to Vancouver, BC to pursue a PhD in Landscape Ecology at the University of British Columbia [10] [1] [2]where she published scientific articles on landscape change, GIS, and water issues.[11] In 2016, she teamed up with Canadian producer/multi-instrumentalist Brandon Hoffman of Blocktreat [3] to release her second solo album Virginia. [12] [13]Virginia was met with critical acclaim with the album drawing musical comparisons to the likes of Brandi Carlile, Bon Iver, Ryan Adams, Jason Mraz, and Jack Johnson.[14] [15] [16] [17] [18] [19]
Gallagher is currently working with producer Daniel Mendez at Matchbox Studios [4] in Austin, Texas on a new record set to be released in Summer 2018 [20]
