New template for competitive highlights

[edit]

The old layout of result tables for the skater's competition placements has become obsolete regarding accessibility and other issues. So I developed a new template that satisfies all current criteria of the Wiki Manual of Style and is easy to edit with a short markup code, as tested on the pages of Johnny Weir, Tara Lipinski, and Yuzuru Hanyu. What is especially attractive about this template is that you no longer have to bother with background colors for podium placements or pipes to indicate empty table cells. The template automatically interpretes a "3" in the placement cell as a bronze medal and colors the cell accordingly.

Sure, it would be an awful lot of work to change all existing result tables. However, if we want to promote more skater biographies to featured article class, this change will be required anyways (as we could see in the cases of Hanyu and Weir). So I think it's good to have a powerful tool that is easy to use. It also unburdens the biography articles in size. Weir's page has become 1.5 kB shorter, Hanyu's almost 3 kB.

If you notice any bugs with the use of this template or have suggestions for additional parameters, please share them here.

Henni147, could you add a 16th column to this template? Bgsu98 (Talk) 13:34, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In theory yes. But I suggest to split the table in two with 8-8 or 10-6 column distribution. This has the technical reason that such wide tables cannot be properly displayed in mobile view and on narrow screens. They either get squeezed together or move out of the screen to the right. For split senior tables, you can set |between=yes, which gives you the caption "Competition placements between the XXXX–XX and YYYY–YY season".
Note: It might be the case that 15 columns is the upper display limit for table templates. I remember that there was such a discussion, when I created this template, but it may have changed since then. Henni147 (talk) 16:06, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
