Development
The screenplay was co-written by Teddy Lussi-Modeste and Audrey Diwan,[2] inspired by Lussi-Modeste's own experience when he was a French teacher at a school in Aubervilliers and was wrongfully accused of assaulting a 13-year-old female student in 2020.[7]
The working title was originally Cueillez votre jeunesse,[8][9] and it was later changed to La Plainte,[7] before being renamed again to Pas de Vague.[9]
François Civil was announced in the lead role on 20 May 2022.[7] On 11 July 2022, it was reported that the project was granted an advance on receipts by the CNC.[10]
The Good Teacher was co-produced by France's Kazak Productions[2] and Belgium's Frakas Productions.[5][6] International sales are handled by the Paris-based company Indie Sales.[2] The first image from the film was unveiled on 9 May 2023.[2] The film will be introduced to buyers at the 2023 Cannes Film Market with an exclusive promo-reel.[2]
Filming
Principal photography began in Paris on 9 November 2022 and wrapped on 10 December 2022.[11][5]
Release
The film will be released theatrically in France by Ad Vitam in the fall of 2023.[2]
