New Zealand Opera is New Zealand's largest professional opera company. The company was formed in 2000 when the Auckland Opera (1970–2000) and Wellington City Opera (1992–1999) companies decided to merge into one organisation for financial reasons.[1] The company produces three fully staged operas each year during an annual season. The company is based primarily in Auckland, with a second centre in Wellington and Christchurch.
