Incidents in Markethill during the Troubles resulting in two or more fatalities:
1974
- 20 March 1974 – Michael Herbert (31), a member of the British Army, was shot dead by the RUC Special Patrol Group. While returning from the airport with other British Army colleagues in a British Army civilian-type van, the van broke down at Mowhan, near Markethill. The Special Patrol Group opened fire on them without warning, thinking they were IRA. British soldier Michael Cotton (36) was killed by the same group in the follow-up to this incident, and two other members of the British Army were wounded.
1980
- 12 June 1980 – the IRA placed a car bomb in the centre of the town, causing significant damage.
1982
- 16 November 1982 – Ronald Irwin (24) and Snowdon Corkey (41), both Protestant members of the Royal Ulster Constabulary, were shot dead by the Irish National Liberation Army, while at a security barrier, Newry Street, Markethill.
1991
- 28 August 1991 – the IRA placed a 1,000-lb bomb in a van outside the police station in the town.
1993
- 1 October 1993 the IRA planted a 200-lb bomb at the Gosford Hotel in the town.
1997
- 16 September 1997 the Continuity IRA planted a bomb at the police station in the town.
