He was born in Camperdown in Victoria to Theodore Trautwein and Annie McCarthy. He became a publican, with a hotel at Katoomba and several others. In 1900 he married Katherine Gertrude Elizabeth Kane. He was an independent member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1934 to 1940, when he was bankrupted after a conviction of making false representation with regards to ongoing litigation regarding tax income on betting.
