Tosa Kuroshio Railway Asa Line
The Asa Line (阿佐線, Asa-sen) is a Japanese railway line operated by Tosa Kuroshio Railway that connects Nankoku and Nahari in Kōchi Prefecture.
History
In 1959 it was decided to build a JR line from Gomen (on the Dosan Line), east of Kochi, to Muroto, where it would connect with the planned extension of the JR Mugi Line from Tokushima. Construction commenced in 1965 and continued until work was suspended in 1980.
In 1988 construction work was recommenced by the Tosa Kusoshio Railway Co., and the line opened in 2002 as the Asa line. Extension of the line to Muroto has not been proposed to date.
Former connecting lines
The Tosa Electric Railway Co. opened a tramway from Kochi to Gomen in 1924, extended to Aki (27km in total) in 1930. The line was electrified at 600v DC in 1949. The line closed in 1974, the route being parallel to the Asa line though there was no physical connection at Gomen.
