Treehorn is the protagonist in a series of children's books written by Florence Parry Heide, including The Shrinking of Treehorn, Treehorn's Wish and Treehorn's Treasure. The title character is a boy with unobservant, distant parents. In "The Shrinking of Treehorn", he discovers that he is getting smaller, as he cannot reach the gumballs and candy bars he's hidden on a previously accessible shelf. When his parents comment on it, they say, "Maybe he's doing it on purpose, just to be different." In the end, Treehorn returns to his normal size.
