The Ulu Jelai Power Station is a hydroelectric power station under construction in the district of Cameron Highlands, Pahang, Malaysia. It is one of the entry point projects under the Economic Transformation Programme.[1]

Location

The project is located approximately 150 km north of Kuala Lumpur. The nearest town is Ringlet, 40 km away. The under-construction station is accessible from route FT 194 connecting the tows of Ringlet and Sungai Koyan. It is located within Ulu Jelai and Bukit Jerut forest reserves, near Cameron Highlands-Lipis district border.

Construction

Construction commenced in 2011 and with the first unit expected to be commissioned in December 2015. A 88 m high roller compacted concrete dam has been built on Sungai Bertam, impounding the Susu reservoir. 15 km long water transfer tunnels are used to divert water from Sungai Telom and Sungai Lemoi. Other underground structures include headrace and tailrace tunnels, surge shaft, two penstocks, transformer and surge chamber caverns. It has an underground power house with generating capacity of 2 x 186 MW. Water used for electricity generation will be released back into Sungai Telom.

Construction of the water transfer tunnels were performed using a 3 m diameter tunnel boring machine. The drill and blast technique was employed for the excavation of the underground power house, transformer and surge chamber caverns, headrace and tailrace tunnels and penstocks. The surge shaft was excavated using the raised boring technique.

Apart from the construction of the structures for power generation, this project requires the relocation of 3 orang Asli villages, namely Kampung Susu, Kampung Tiat and Kampung Pinang.

Issues

Sedimentation is a major issue for Sungai Bertam and Sungai Telom.[2] A check dam is currently under construction at the tail of Susu reservoir on Sungai Bertam to reduce the amount of sediment entering. A desander system has also been constructed at the intake of Sungai Telom for the same purpose.
