Universidad Iberoamericana León (IBERO León) is a private, Jesuit university located in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico which was founded in 1978 to extend the reach of Universidad Iberoamericana to the state of Guanajuato and the Bajio region. It is a part of the Mexican Jesuit University System.
Nature
Universidad Iberoamericana León is a private entity, created and governed by Promotion of Culture and Higher Education Bajio, AC, which provides instruction at all levels of education, fosters cultural and scientific activities, promotes scientific research and cultural and literary endeavors, and undertakes complementary activities.
Mission
"The Mission of the Universidad Iberoamericana León is, through educational activity at the university level, to make an effective contribution to make Mexico a freer, more productive, just, and united country. This mission affects all levels of university functions: in teaching with the formation of capable men and women with and for others; in research by encouraging a more appropriate culture for human living; in broadcasting as space for reflection, dialogue, and discernment; in various professional and practical services for the transformation of society."[1]
History
- 1978 – Universidad Iberoamericana León founded, to extend educational services to the state of Guanajuato UIA and the Bajio region
- 1980 – donation of 10 hectares of land for the present campus
- 1983 – construction begins on present campus
- 1985 – inauguration of the permanent seat of the UIA León; appointment of Jorge Vertiz Campero, S.J., as director
- 1987 – construction competed on first building at current campus, the seat of the local committee of AIESEC León
- 1993 – opening Great Hall of St. Ignatius and Academic Information Centre Jorge Vertiz Campero, S.J.
- 2002 – construction begins on Workshop of Art and Design
- 2009 – construction begins on center for Innovation, Learning and Competitiveness (UIAC)
- 2011 – laboratories and engineering sciences moved to Innovation, Learning, and Competitiveness center (UIAC)
- 2012 – Gerardo Valenzuela, S.J., rector for six years, replaced by Marco Antonio Bran Flores, S.J.
- 2014 – Jesus Felipe Torres Espinosa, S.J., becomes rector
Campus
Facilities in general: 13.2 hectares of campus with 17.859 m2 of building space, 94 classrooms, 33 labs, and 8 workshops, besides sports facilities and technological park.
- Buildings: classroom, administration, art and design, Great Hall of Saint Ignatius, library, basic science workshops and laboratories, engineering workshop, art workshop, innovation unit, learning and competitiveness center (UIAC), Christian Jean, S.J., Art Gallery, S.J., photo studio, cafetera, child care center, snack shack, school supplies store, maintenance.
