The University of Cambodia (UC) is a private, English language based[1] university located on Northbridge Road in Sangkat Toek Thla, Phnom Penh, Kingdom of Cambodia.[2] UC was founded on 23 June 2003[3] by H.E. Dr. Kao Kim Hourn,[4] Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and President of the University of Cambodia,[5] and H.E. Dr. Haruhisa Handa,[6] Advisor to the Royal Government of Cambodia, Founder and Chairman of the International Foundation for Arts and Culture,[7] and Chancellor of The University of Cambodia.[8] UC is accredited by the Royal Government of Cambodia [9] and the Accreditation Committee of Cambodia (ACC),[10] and is a member of the Cambodian Higher Education Association (CHEA).[11]

The motto of the university is, “In Pursuit of Knowledge, Wisdom and Building Tomorrow’s Leaders.”[12] The universities mission and vision focus primarily on preparing Cambodian youth to take on leadership roles within society by developing their analytical problem solving skills and critical thinking abilities.[13][14]

The University of Cambodia uses the American credit-based system as a model,[15] and the programs are taught through the medium of the English language.[16] In 2013, the University launched the Khmer Track, which offers the same UC programs, but taught in the medium of the Khmer (Cambodian) language. UC subsequently renamed the existing English language programs the International Track.[17]

The University is organized to provide Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral programs through its eight colleges and schools: the College of Arts, Humanities and Languages, the College of Education, the College of Law, the College of Management, the College of Media and Communications,[18] the College of Science and Technology, the College of Social Sciences, and the Techo Sen School of Government and International Relations.[19] Additionally, the Graduate Studies Division oversees the university’s graduate programs. [20]

The university also houses the Institute for Research and Advanced Studies (IRAS), Institute for Technical and Professional Training (ITPT), the Asia Leadership Center (ALC), Center for ASEAN and East Asian Studies (CAEAS), Center for International Studies (CIS), and Center for English Studies (CES).[21] It awards bachelor's degrees (three terms/year means that these can be done in as little as three years), Master's degrees and Doctorate Degrees.[22]

The school's establishment of the Asian Economic Forum (AEF) in May 2005 and the Asian Faiths Development Dialogue has raised the profile of the university internationally.[23] The AEF acts as an independent forum for "promoting policy dialogue on major issues facing Asia at present and in the future, with the aim of bringing together important policymakers in various fields, as well as leading scholars and researchers, eminent thinkers and educators, and leaders in the private sector, youth and civil society."[24] The growth of human knowledge, economic progress, and environmental sustainability are high on the forum's agenda.[24]

Enrollment

The University, a private entity with due accreditation accorded by the Accreditation Committee of Cambodia has a total enrollment of about 5,000 with both men and women. It is a non profit organization and has a variable staff strength of 50-99.[22]

Scholarships

The University offers three types of scholarships at the undergraduate level which are both aimed at excellence in scholastic performance to set standards and also to encourage needy students who have shown promise for higher education after high school. These scholarships are categorized as; the Academic Excellence Scholarships for outstanding students as the name suggests which are merit based with specific stipulations on performance; Scholastic Aptitude Scholarships specific for students who have the desire and aptitude to purse university education but lack financial support and hence 50% fees is exempt ; and Partial Scholarships are for those students who are judged to be suitable for further studies but can not afford to pay the fees,[25]

Resources

With a collection of more than 50,000 books, magazines, newspapers, and periodicals, the university's Toshu Fukami Library is considered to be one of the best in Cambodia.[26] UC's publishing company is the University of Cambodia Press. As of 2009, the school has been introducing e-learning for some of its programs.[27]

Notable people

Michael Haas, Professor Emeritus at University of Hawaii, is the Chairman of the university's International Academic Advisory Board.[28] UC student Noun Pichsoudeny, the youngest student writer in Cambodia and the author of four published novels, is also a member of the Khmer Writers' Association.[29] The Hong Kong actor and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Jackie Chan received an honorary doctorate degree from the university in 2009.[30][31] Kenichi Itō, Professor Emeritus of Aoyama Gakuin University, received an Honorary Doctorate from the University.
