The Wild Hunt (periodical) is an online news journal providing news and commentary relating to modern Paganism, Heathenry, polytheism, the Occult, Neopagan, Wicca, and other similar religions or practices. It is an independent news agency, funded entirely by the communities it serves: Pagans, Heathens, Witches, and polytheists around the world. The Wild Hunt (TWH) covers national and international news and events, as well as offers commentary on issues affecting and involving the Pagan community.
Since its founding in 2004, the website features daily news coverage of topics related or of interest to modern Pagans around the globe. These topics include ecology, archaeology discoveries, history, entertainment, reviews, community gatherings, and more. Each week, columnists offer perspective pieces which provide a more personal lens through which to experience current events.
History
[edit]The Wild Hunt was founded in 2004 by Jason Pitzl. Pitzl was the sole writer for The Wild Hunt for its first seven years. In the summer of 2011, The Wild Hunt was recruited to Patheos, a central hub site that hosts blogs related to many religions. [1]
The Wild Hunt eventually left Patheos returning to a stand-alone entity. In the fall of 2012, Pitzl brought on the first two weekly contributors and four monthly columnists. In 2014, Pitzl retired from his position. Heather Greene took over as managing editor and publisher.
With Greene's retirement from The Wild Hunt,[2] Manny Moreno became Editor in Chief in 2018.
The Wild Hunt has continued to evolve into a recognized independent news outlet with 2 editors, 6 weekly writers, 10 dedicated columnists, and a team of regular guest contributors.
Content
[edit]The Wild Hunt publishes news items during the week, and perspective pieces from its team of columnists on the weekends. Some notable regular features include.
Pagan Community Notes are published each week and offer a summary of news items that either spotlight Pagans, Heathens, and other polytheists, or of are interest to these groups. Stories that are first introduced via Pagan Community Notes often are the subject of feature articles later in the week.
The Hounds articles are round-ups of news related to a given topic. The Wild Hunt "Unleashes the Hounds" and offers periodic round-ups of news related to archaeology, environmental causes, science, and space news.
Spotlight on Tradition articles are interviews with Pagans, Heathens, Witches, and other polytheists about their specific practice and tradition.
Pagan Voices showcase comments and quotes from various Pagans on different issues. Each Pagan Voices article is focused on a unique topic.
Uncovering the Past spotlights recent archaeological developments and how these can provide deeper understandings of practices by ancient peoples.
