Deb Kane[1] is an Australian Physicist at Macquarie University, in the MQ Photonics Research Centre. She is distinguished for her work on the basic physics of semiconductor lasers and their application to changing the properties of surfaces.

Career[edit]

After her undergraduate degree from the University of Otago, her PhD from St Andrews University and a post doctoral position at Southhampton she has had Faculty positions at Massey University in New Zealand and Macquarie University in Australia. There she became a Professor, and was Head of the Department from 2003 to 2006.

She became a member of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) Commission on Quantum Optics, as C17 was then called, in 2011. In 2014 she became Chair of the Commission under the new name "Commission on Laser Physics and Photonics"[2].

Awards[edit]

The Australian Institute of Physics recognised her eminence in her field in 2006 by appointing her as its Women in Physics Lecturer for that year. She became a role model for young women as she traveled Australia giving inspiring lectures .

Contributions[edit]

As the Chair of the IUPAP C17, she managed difficult relations between her Commission and the International Commission on Optics, both of which covered similar fields, and moved the working relationship to one of cooperation. She also played an important part in changing the procedures for nomination of people for positions on the IUPAP Commissions, ensuring that those nominated had a better appreciation of the responsibilites they were taking on if they were elected to the Commission.
