John Blakemore is CEO and principal consultant of MASC Pty Limited trading as Blakemore Consulting which offers consulting services in Lean Manufacturing and Innovation and business analysis and training. He holds degrees in applied science and engineering and completed his PhD in Sept 1968 and graduated in 1969. This work was done after he won an International Nickel fellowship for his research work on the mechanical properties of steel for which he was awarded the degree of MSc from the University of Newcasle where he was also the first graduate of this university in 1966. After completion of his doctoral thesis he was employed as a Research Scientist at the Australian Atomic Energy Commission at Lucas Heights where he successfully completed a post doctoral certificate in Nuclear Technology. He was recognised in 2007 as one of Australia's most innovative and influential engineers by the Australian Institution of Engineers. Much of his work is available on line at www.blakemore.com.au. Post PhD and after his role as Chief Metallurgist at John Lysaght (now Bluescope Steel) he held positions of Technical Director, Engineering Manager, Divisional General Manager, Marketing Director and CEO with a range of international companies including Wormald,and GEC. He wrote and delivered the first course on Lean Manufacturing in Australia in 1991 at the UNSW and the first course for mature aged teachers in Industrial Arts at the University of Newcastle. He has also taught at the University of Sydney Research Institute for Asia and the Pacific and been keynote speaker at numerous conferences both in Australia and Overseas.As principal consultant of Blakemore Consulting he has advised many international companies on Lean Manufacturing and process improvement and developed numerous new patented manufacturing processes for companies including such well known enterprises as Pirelli, Cochlear, Speedo, Panasonic, Prix Car Services (Honda, Toyota), Moore Business Systems, BHP, Duracell, and Email, over the last 25 years. He has carried out numerous consulting assignments to companies in France, Germany, Italy, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, NZ and Japan. He regularly visits the world's best companies to upgrade his knowledge in addition to successfully completing Harvard business courses conducted by Professors, Yoshino, Macfarlan, and Hayes and INSEAD with Professor Williamson. John has authored two critically acclaimed books, "The Quality Solution" and "Quality Habits". The latter was translated into Chinese for delivery in Mandarin. His recent visits to Japan have been documented in downloads on his website and in "New Engineer". His paper on page 15 of the March 2008 issue is used as a valuable resource by the United States Air-force. His Strategic Plan model which wqas given as a deed of gift to Blakemore Consulting by the Federal Government is widely used and has been the basis of a well received paper at the World's Innovation and Strategic Planning conference. John has been an advisor to two successive Federal Governments and sat on a Federal government's advisory board on Industrial Research and Development and the Australian Institute of Management advisory board. John is listed in Who's Who in the world and Who's Who in Australia. His most recent study tour in 2006 included Canon, Honda, Panasonic, Toyota, and Kawai, companies he chose as amongst he world's best. He is a fellow of numerous professional societies and a CPEng and CMC.
