Diego Lazkano is the main character of this story. In the 80's, he was in a command with Zeberio and Soto, Diego Lazkanos best frineds. All changed for him when he condemn his friends at the time he was been tortured. The Civil Guard arrested Soto and Zeberio. The cops murder the boys after giving them an excessive torture. The murder of his friends is going to chanche everything in Lazkanos live. He is going to feel the presence of his friends every time, although he knows that they are buried near the Mediterrenean.

Diego has a close relation with a girl called Gloria, and although the 80's are far, Diego remember his murdered friends. He is translator, and he sometimes discuss about Art and life with Gloria.

Harkaitz Cano is a Basque writer, born in the town of Lasarte, Guipúzcoa in the August 4, 1975. He studied law degree and has developed all kinds of literary works, novels, short stories, children's literature... Apparently, since he visited New York City, has developed a great love for this city, a city that otherwise appears frequently in his literary. Won awards; Imagine Euskadi in 1992, the city of Donostia in 1993. the Ignacio Aldekoa in 1999 and the Euskadi award twice, in 2005 for Bellarraren Ahoa and in 2012 for the novel Twist. The author decided that his nobela tell those terrible fact that occurred when he was 8 years old, and which marked him internally, "I had the need for certain case aspectod Lasa and Zabala, who had internalized from my youth, as they were made very traumatic for Euskal Herria and I wanted to take all this suffering". Still, Cano narrate these events in a prudent and using literary devices to respect both sides who fought in that conflict, giving the wake a historical view to the narrative. This technique was used to not cause pain to the families of the two killed and the other side. Cano wanted to give his novel a few characteristic features, relating this cruel event with art for the book, using a strange technique, ie, using the bodies of these two Basque as art if it were in the novel, using terms like performance and ready-made to refer to the bodies.

Narrative estrategy

The author relates the events in his novel with art, he mentions his favorite painters and talks about the works that have marked more, it distances the reader from the main plot, the Soto and Zeberio starring. The author loves art and this is reflected in his novel, with mentions whining to the art world in general. Use art as if it were a code secret, using it, is the remains of the two killed as one more piece of artistic collection. Cano creates a narrative very fast by modern technique, using the premise of some events that occurred in the 80s, to enter all these years now. In this way achieve a very fast narrative. A narrative technique that forces the reader to move very quickly between the plot, telling only the events of more notoriety.

History

This narrative has as based around real events, specifically the murder of young Basques Lasa and Zabala. These two murders occurred during call dirty war were murdered by GAL terrorits band, which kidnapping, tortured and murderer to the two members of ETA. They were arrested in the town of Baiona and then taken to the city of San Sebastian, the capital of Gipuzkoa where they were tortured and later taken to Alicante, there were killed by two shots in the head and buried underground, with several scoops of lime to desconponiesen that bodies before. Few years later a farmer radio call saying they had found bones, digging up the whole case.

Diego Lazkano

Diego Lazkano is a translator and is part of the band that fights for the liberation of the Basque Country. In the charter named "Redy Made" the espeaks aboaut his quiet life, although he remenber over and over again he events of the 80s. In his childhood he estarted to join in a theater group because he was in love wiht Gloria, ande there, in this theater group, was where he met his best friends Soto and Zeberio. Later, the protagonist and narrator, condens his two friend while he is being tortured by the Civil Guard Of Espain. The absence of his two friends and all that situation changes his life forever.

Gloria

To estart speaking wiht the description of Gloria, we have to say, that the descripstion is gived fron the point of view of Diego Lazkano. Diego Lazkano ilustrates in the book da she have short hair, that whit the time is becoming more and more grey and whit a black complexion. She is not married and she has not any children. She lives in Barcenola, in a litle loft located in the Monjuic discrict. She hasn´t got any relation whit his family for two reasons: because she like the freedom of living alone and because the relation with his father is very bad, owing to the fact that, he is a fascist.In the book she commonly argued with Lazkano about politics, arts and other issues. She is an artist, despite she doesn´t sell many book. Seeing that, she begin to take drugs.

  • Xabi Soto: He works in the building contruction of Gloria as a constructor. Is a fiend of Zererio and Lazkano. He is muerdered after being tortured and buried near the mediterranean for the reason of being part of E.T.A.
  • Zeberio: He was killed together wiht Soto and in the same situation.Like his friends Lazkano and Soto, he worked in the work of Gloria.

  • Hernandez & Vargas: The reply Rodrigos orders, they dont think aboaut theyr shelf and they are not happy with the things that they done.
  • Rodrigo Mesa lieutenant coronel: He believes in his work more than anithyng else. straight, which he likes to fulfill their orders without questioning anything at all.

  • Furmica: Furmica is the father of Gloria. He is Lieutenant and his apearrance is more than 75 years. Fascist and aristocratic.
  • Gabriel Lazkano:He is the father of Diego. Lives in Mexico. When he was ill, he disappeared from the life of his son. His son believes he is dead.
  • Meliton Manzanas:The first police who deliberately killed ETA.Torturer.He charged favors fron mothers and sisters of the detainees as it suited him. He was accused of collaborating whit the Nacims in the exterdimation of the jews in enchange of people in which the Spanish goverment was interesed.
  • Santiago Cervera:Medical and friend of the father of Diego Lazkano. There is talk in the book that says that he was involved in dity things... Disssapearence of chlindrend, use of violence...

Relation with Art

The book "Twist" of Arkaitz Cano is strongly relacionated with the art. Besides the author defined the name of the firts chapter with the term of "Cambalache". That means that the author wants to relacionate fron the beginning, the book wiht the art. In addition of saying that the title of the book is "Twist" taht it refres to an american dance. The author speaks about different artist and diferent movements into the wolrd of art in the book, but the main chapter where this arts concepts are so extended is the chapter named "Redy Made". The Ready Made movement was created by Marcel Duchamp in the XX century. This art movement uses usually old and pointless elements that are exposed in another context in order to create art. One of the mos famous artist of this movement was Joseph Beuys. Another inportant term that apeared in the book is the term of "Permormance":this term is about aesthetics, the aesthetics of the senses. This movement reached the top in the 80s and today it is used in the plastic arts. This artistic movement is against the pinture and sculpture arts, rather than the object in takes into account the subject.
