Bibliography[edit]

  • Archibald, Anna. "A Day in the Life of Star D.C. Chef Kwame Onwuachi." The Daily Beast, Feb 24, 2020. Western Newsstand, https://www.thedailybeast.com/a-day-in-the-life-of-star-dc-chef-kwame-onwuachi-from-restaurant-kith-and-kin.[1]
    • In this newspaper article from "The Daily Beast," author Anna Archibald gives a detailed account of Chef Onwuachi's turbulent past and exciting future. Beginning with a biographical summary, Archibald then includes a direct interview with Onwuachi discussing topics from his first job to his go-to tools in the kitchen. In my article, I plan to use this source to help verify some of the information currently in the "Education and career" section and strengthen the currently bare "Early-life" section.
  • Carman, Tim. "Kwame Onwuachi's new memoir is a must-read on what it's like to be a young, black chef in America." The Washington Post  Mar 29, 2019. https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/food/kwame-onwuachis-new-memoir-is-a-must-read-on-what-its-like-to-be-a-young-black-chef-in-america/2019/03/29/51164000-50d6-11e9-88a1-ed346f0ec94f_story.html[2]
    • Coming from the reputable publication, The Washington Post, this article by Tim Carman does a wonderful job of commenting on Onwuachi's memoir, while also including detailed stories from his personal life. In my editing process, this source should come in to play in two main areas. Firstly, the personal information will allow me to further add to the already existing "Early-life" and "Career and Education" sections. Furthermore, I plan on adding a "Publications" section, where a book-review like this will be quite helpful.
  • Carman, Tim. "Kwame Onwuachi's new restaurant pays tribute to New York and survival." The Washington Post, Nov 28, 2022. https://www.washingtonpost.com/food/2022/11/28/kwame-onwuachi-profile-tatiana-restaurant/ [3]
    • Once again written by author Tim Carman of The Washington Post, this new article revolves around Onwuachi's most recent developments—namely his brand new NYC-based restaurant, Tatiana. As the Wiki article currently does not include any information beyond 2019, this source will be quite useful when discussing Chef Kwame's current occupation and the immense praise he has already received in New York.
  • Dean, Tres. “The Real-Life Diet of Chef Kwame Onwuachi, Who Lets His Cravings Lead the Way.” GQ, May 26, 2022, https://www.gq.com/story/real-life-diet-kwame-onwuachi [4]
    • A direct interview with Chef Onwuachi, this 2022 article from GQ Magazine dives into Kwame's life outside of the profession kitchen or TV set. In discussing his favorite quick bites and off-day routine, Kwame reveals a lot about his personal style and the techniques that allow him to stand out among the fine-dining crowd. In my article, I plan on adding a brief section discussing Kwame's personal cooking philosophy, (maybe titled "Culinary Philosophy), so this should be helpful in that regard.
  • Fowler, Richard. “Storytelling On The Plate: Kwame Onwuachi's Afro-Caribbean Journey To Lincoln Center,” Forbes, Mar 1, 2023, https://www.forbes.com/sites/richardfowler/2023/03/01/storytelling-on-the-plate-kwame-onwuachis-afro-caribbean-journey-to-lincoln-center/?sh=13cf4615313f [5]
    • Published in Forbes Magazine in 2023, this article by Richard Fowler gives a detailed interview with Kwame mainly about his new NYC based restaurant, Tatiana. The interview covers things from the reasoning behind the restaurant's name to the cultures and dishes that inspired their diverse menu. In my article, I plan to use this source to help update the career section, as it currently only goes up to 2019.
  • Goldfield, Hannah. “Kwame Onwuachi’s Electric Tatiana, at Lincoln Center.” The New Yorker,  Jan 06, 2023, https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2023/01/16/kwame-onwuachis-electric-tatiana-at-lincoln-center [6]
    • Similar to the source above, this article from The New Yorker, covers a lot of Kwame's recent work in NYC. Both a restaurant review and a short biography, the article does a good job of highlighting how Kwame's unique past experiences are influencing his current culinary vision. In my article, I plan to use this to strengthen the career section and also add some further details to the "Culinary Philosophy" section I hope to include.
  • Gordon, Doug. “Kwame Onwuachi Tells the Story Of His Culinary Coming-Of-Age.” Wisconsin Public Radio, May 18, 2019, https://www.wpr.org/kwame-onwuachi-tells-story-his-culinary-coming-age [7]
    • A radio interview done with Wisconsin Public Radio, this source goes into a lot of detail regarding Onwuachi's upbringing and early-career experiences. In my article revision, I hope this will allow me to add greater detail to his "Early Life" section as it is currently rather bare. Additionally, I believe that the highly-personal style of the interview will help while writing the "Culinary Philosophy," as it gives good insight into Kwame's mind while he's in the kitchen.
  • Holley, Eugene J. "Kith and Kitchen." Publishers Weekly, vol. 266, no. 9, 2019, pp. 48-49, https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/authors/interviews/article/79421-kith-and-kitchen-pw-talks-with-kwame-onwuachi.html [8]
    • In this 2019 interview with Publisher's Weekly, Kwame discusses some of the key moments in his life that brought him to where he is today. Speaking on his time in Africa as a child, Onwuachi highlights how the diverse cultural exposure he gained continues to inspire his menus and innovations. In my article, this source should help to beef up the early-life section and could also help talk about his time at Kith and Kin, his now-closed D.C. based restaurant.
  • Jessica Kehinde Ngo. “Kwame Onwuachi Is Putting African Diasporic Cuisines in Conversation.” Epicurious, Jul 13, 2022, https://www.epicurious.com/shopping/kwame-onwuachi-my-america-cookbook-review[9]
    • A review of Onwuachi's newest publication, My America: Recipes from a Young Black Chef, this source speaks a lot on the experiences and moments in Kwame's life that have shaped his cooking style. In my article, I hope to add a "Publications" section, so a detailed book review like this one ought to be quite helpful.
  • Joshua Johnson, and A1 Podcasts. “A Conversation with Chef Kwame Onwuachi,” National Public Radio, Apr 23, 2019, https://www.npr.org/2019/04/23/716455207/a-conversation-with-chef-kwame-onwuachi[10]
    • In this 2019 radio interview with NPR, Kwame and the host, Joshua Johnson, get into a deep conversation regarding the triumphs and struggles of his past. In particular, they cover a lot of the original inspiration behind why Onwuachi got into cooking in the first place. As such, I plan to use this source primarily to help strengthen the ealry life section of his article.
  • Kittner, Gena. "Culinary Journey Starts in the Pantry: Author Q&A | Kwame Onwuachi." Wisconsin State Journal, 2022, pp. D.3. U.S. Newsstream, https://madison.com/entertainment/books/cookbook-author-finds-rich-cultural-cuisine-begins-with-a-well-stocked-pantry/article_4cbfbc4a-55c3-5744-b40d-8266f8c002f9.html.[11]
    • In this interview with the Wisconsin State Journal Kwame gives an in depth look into his life outside of the professional kitchen. Taking a tour throughout his home pantry, Onwuachi speaks about a what he genuilely enjoys to cook and eat, rather than what gets him paid. I think this source will work very well into the "Culinary Philosophy" section, as it talks about things that often go unexplored in the world of fine dining.
  • Kleber-Diggs, Michael. “Review: 'Notes From a Young Black Chef,' by Kwame Onwuachi, with Joshua David Stein.” Star Tribune, Apr 5, 2019, https://www.startribune.com/review-notes-from-a-young-black-chef-by-kwame-onwuachi-with-joshua-david-stein/508126822/ [12]
    • Published to the Star Tribune, this book review by Michael Kleber-Diggs covers Onwuachi's first publication, a memior titled Notes From a Young Black. While also giving some commentary on the writing itself, Kleber-Diggs summarizes much of the major/key moments in Kwame's life—all-the-while praising him for how far his journey has come. In the Wiki article, this source will especially by useful in the "Publications" section.

    • Taken from New York Times in 2019, this newspaper article dives thoroughly into Kwame's journey from the streets of the Bronx to receiving the height of fine dining recognition. From talking about his struggles in conventional school to diving into his first failure as a head chef, the source covers many of Onwuachi's defining moments and as such, will be useful to reference throughout the entire Wiki article.

    • This source discusses a lot of Kwame's recognition within the media, so ti will be used within the "awards" section. Also, it touches upon the struggles of being an African American in the fine dining world, which is an underrepresented narrative, so it is interesting to see.
